I start from the constraint, not the feature. What does this page have to do, on the slowest device that will open it, and what is the least it can ship to do that well?

From there the work is subtraction. I remove code until the thing is as small and as plain as it can be while still being clear to the next person who opens the file.

I would rather ship something quiet that holds up than something loud that needs a rewrite in a year. Most of the best work is invisible: the request that never fires, the script that was never shipped.
